Embrace The Slow Lane

Nowadays, it seems that everything is a click away. Instant gratification has become something more than convenience. It is a lifestyle. It exists in our private and professional lives.

We zip through life in the express lane.

The thrill of getting something right here, right now, is hard to beat. Who doesn’t love instant popcorn, instant messages, or instant wifi? It’s like living in a magic world where wishes are granted with a tap or a swipe, even love. But amidst this whirlwind of quick fixes, we might miss out on anticipation’s joys. I remember the excitement of waiting for something to come, like a great movie. There’s something to be said for the sweet suspense of waiting.

They say patience is a virtue, but it feels more like a vintage concept in the age of instant everything. Yet, rediscovering the art of waiting can be surprisingly refreshing. Imagine savouring the anticipation of a home-cooked meal, the unfolding story of a book, or even the gradual progress toward a personal goal. These experiences can offer a depth of satisfaction that instant gratification often skips over.

The constant rush for immediate rewards can turn life into an endless chase, leaving us feeling like we’re running on a hamster wheel. Slowing down can help break this cycle, reducing stress and increasing happiness.

What are some practical ways to embrace the slow lane? Based on my experience:

  • Choose an unplugged walk over a scroll on social media: we often combine walking with listening to something. Try something different. Walk unplugged.
  • Have 1:1 conversations instead of group chats: while I enjoy being with friends and having fun, the value of having a conversation with only one person over dinner or coffee, where you can go one level deeper on sharing experiences and thoughts, is liberating.
  • Learn a new skill instead of binge-watching: it could be anything, from a musical instrument to coding to painting. Learning requires patience, and it helps with slowing down.

By occasionally opting for the slower path, we might discover new joys and a deeper appreciation for life’s little moments. So next time the allure of instant gratification tempts you, take a breath, slow down, and remember that some of the best things in life are worth the wait.
